Spellcraft, or Witchery, is the art of channeling Arcanum into a particular element or form by memorizing a spell, or by reading it from a Spell Tome or (less commonly) a Scroll. For someone who is not gifted in the art, or is not a Metahuman, learning how to channel Arcanum requires years of complex tutelage.
One is taught the ways of Spellcraft by learning the principles of Izanagi (and how they correspond to life), learning of the elements and their creation, and learning of the creation of Heaven and Earth. By understanding these ideals, a person opens themselves to the words in which magic is understood, in other words, the power of witchery comes from knowledge, as opposed to the powers of a Metahuman, which come from exposure to raw Arcanum.
Origin[]
Spellcraft (U~itcherī) is an art which originally emerged in Japan around 635 AD, and was first used by Japanese Shamans to heal those wounded in battle, and even return men from the brink of death. The first teacher of the arts (at least the man who is credited for its creation) was Dairoku Azuma, a powerful Shaman who is said to have been instructed by the gods themselves concerning the magical properties of Arcanum and its healing abilities. Although, compared to later sorcerers of the world, these Shamans had limited abilities, they are still known as legends amongst the many practicers of magic in the modern world. It is said that Dairoku created the first literal version of an enchantment on a piece of parchment in 654 AD, and on it was not only the true source of the magic school of life, but also the principles from which it was created.
Spells[]
Spells are the result of Spellcraft, for when one speaks the literary form of an enchantment, a spell is born. Spells range from elemental abilities to control over the forces of life and death, and are traditionally found in mass numbers in the form of a book or a scroll. If a practicer of magic is especially powerful, spells an be summoned by simply thinking the incantation. There are Seven Trees of Sorcery, all of which hold a vast variety of spells which go by many different names, and take many different forms depending on the caster who wields them. The Seven Trees of Sorcery include the Elemental Tree, the Tree of Rejuvenation, the Tree of Pretense, the Forsaken Tree, the Tree of Radiance, the Blighted Tree, and the Crepuscule Tree.
